Do you wear it, or put it on your wall? Or is it something that sits on the kitchen table as a reminder of that great exhibition, or that great work of art by an artist that you really connect with. How artists and brands collaborate is reflected in the wide range of stuff that exists out there — but beyond being a souvenir — why do people collect it?
In this first of two LaboKarya conversations about artists and the creative industry, Amalia Wirjono focusses on the role of the collector — and will be joined by collector and supporter of the arts, Axton Salim, and artist Agan Harahap, in an online discussion about artists working with brands, and the collectors who seek it out.
What makes an artist want to work with a brand — is it about making things more accessible? Perhaps, to support a fundraising cause? Or the satisfaction of seeing their work circulate in completely different ways which the gallery system doesn’t always allow? Agan Harahap will discuss what makes a good collaboration, and what motivates him — together with a look at some recent projects. As well as being an avid collector, and patron, Axton Salim also collects artist brand collaborations with the idea that these kinds of collaborations open up a broader awareness of the work of artists in our society, as well as a being innovative projects for the brands that he loves — how and why did he start? How does this fit in with his other activities as a collector?
Join us for this lively conversation to kickstart the LaboKarya program, bringing artists and brands!
Following the success of the Arisan Karya art drive last year, which saw artists and collectors across Indonesia come together to support the artist community during the height of Covid-19, Museum MACAN has initiated LaboKarya. LaboKarya pairs leading artists and creative brands together to collaborate and create new, limited and exclusive art merchandise to be unveiled in May 2021.
The artist and brand pairings are:
Uglyism x Girls Pay the Bills
The Goods Dept x Mufti Priyanka
UNKL347 x Agam Dwi Nurcahyo (MAGAFAKA)
Indofood x Agan Harahap
These creative pairings promise innovative approaches to art merchandise, fusing each brand’s product development expertise together with the artist’s signature artistic style.
The name LaboKarya is a wordplay that combines collaboration, laboratory and artwork (kolaborasi, laboratorium and karya in bahasa Indonesia). Collaboration is at the heart of this program and it will open discussions about art, the creative economy, and ways in which art can be made part of our daily lives.
