About the Artist

Iwan Effendi is a visual artist based in Yogyakarta. After studying Fine Art at the Indonesian Institute of the Arts (ISI) Yogyakarta, he co-founded Papermoon Puppet Theatre with Ria Tri Sulistyani in 2006 and has since served as one of its artistic directors. His extensive experience with Papermoon has shaped the way he understands the body, objects, movement, and attention as integral parts of the creative process.

Effendi has held major solo exhibitions across Asia, including Articulate at Mizuma Art Gallery in Tokyo and Once Was at ARA Contemporary. His works have been presented in institutional projects worldwide, such as at The Museum of Art, Kōchi, Japan, and the Stedelijk Museum Bureau Amsterdam, alongside participating in a research residency program with the Asian Cultural Council in New York.
