CORAL: Coastal Vernacular Lab is an innovative arts education initiative developed by Museum MACAN, in collaboration with Playo and Grundfos Indonesia, with support from the Poul Due Jensen Foundation. This is a pilot project developed as part of the education and community outreach efforts accompanying Olafur Eliasson: Your curious journey exhibition at Museum MACAN. 

CORAL brings together design thinking, local knowledge, and cross-community collaboration in finding solutions for environmental challenges affecting communities in Kalibaru, Cilincing, North Jakarta. The program unfolds through several phases: an onboarding and co-creation session, a 14-day on-site designers’ residency in Kalibaru involving community co-design and student workshops that culminates in a special public presentation at Museum MACAN.

This special presentation displays findings and design solutions offered as a result of the residency done in April 2026. The installation is a collaborative effort between three Indonesian design collectives: Labtek Apung, Unconditional Design, and Kampung Kollektief, as well as Cangkring (Cangkang Kering), a local cooperative based in Kalibaru.

With focus on the changing landscapes and its impact on the forms of adaptation and interaction between species who share their living space in Kalibaru, CORAL: odong-odong multispesies — Special Presentation is suitable for creatives and community organizers working in the intersection of art, design, environmental science, education, and anyone interested in exploring cross-community collaborations.
