MACAN In Conversation: 'Sintila' Up Close and personal with James Jean
Join artist James Jean in a presentation exploring his multifaceted approach to image-making and experiences working with collaborators across different visual languages.
Los Angeles-based artist James Jean was born in Taiwan and attended the School of Visual Arts in New York.
Renowned for his virtuosic ability to work across different genres with an imaginative and multifaceted approach to image making, Jean fuses contemporary subjects with aesthetic techniques inspired by traditional Chinese scroll paintings, Japanese woodblock prints, and Renaissance portraiture. By experimenting with different styles and art-historical genres, Jean depicts detailed cosmological worlds that focus on both individual and universal experiences. Layered with imagery drawn from contemporary culture and age-old allegories, he imagines a collective realm of mythological proportions.
After a groundbreaking collaboration with Prada for their fabled Spring/Summer 2008 collection, Jean has returned after a decade for Prada’s Spring/Summer 2018 collection. Recently, Jean has also worked closely with directors Darren Aronofsky and Guillermo del Toro on poster designs for mother! (2017) and The Shape of Water (2017) as well as A24 and Daniels for Everything, Everywhere All At Once (2022).
Presented in collaboration with BAIK ART to coincide with James Jean’s first solo exhibition in Jakarta, Sintila, Museum MACAN presents a lecture by the artist where he will share insights into his artistic practice and creative process.
