About Children's Art Space
Museum MACAN’s Children’s Art Space commission project presents 'Mawas Wawas' (Mindful Minds), an installation by Mira Rizki that invites us to encounter different forms of life and existence through sound and vibration.
'Mawas Wawas' invites us to reconsider the place of humans within an environment that is constantly moving and changing. Humans are not the center around which life on Earth revolves, but part of a network of relationships between bodies, living beings, objects, and natural processes. Our bodies and senses become a starting point for recognizing and participating in these relationships: through the vibrations we feel, the sounds we hear, and the traces we leave behind. By paying attention to these small experiences, we may begin to understand how our existence continually intersects with other forms of life and existence on Earth.
The installation invites us to reflect on several questions:
- How do we sense and understand the different forms of existence around us? - How can we learn to be fully present as we encounter natural phenomena? - How aware are we that every interaction leaves a trace on Earth?
'Mawas Wawas' invites visitors to pause, feel, listen, and pay attention to the signs and phenomena that emerge through sound and vibration.
After experiencing the vibrations and sounds in the sand pool, visitors can create patterns on a Lempeng Jejak (trace plate), which is then placed onto a gathering structure. These traces gradually form the Lampion Singgah (passage lantern) installation, which continues to grow throughout the exhibition. Each trace records an encounter between body, material, and space, while revealing how our presence can leave changes in the environment around us.
The installation created over the course of the exhibition will be developed into an archive and/or become part of Mira Rizki’s future works after the project concludes.
About the Artist
Mira Rizki (b. Bandung, 1994) is a multidisciplinary artist whose practice focuses on sound, vibration, and the act of listening. Her practice explores how sound manifests among the body, materials, space, memory, and time, not merely as an auditory phenomenon, but as a physical and relational force.
Her experience growing up and activities in the Priangan region have shaped her interest in working with sound, interactive devices, ephemeral materials, and spatial installations. Through soundscapes and works that respond to space, she creates immersive sonic situations that invite the audience to reconsider their relationship with their environment.
In Mira’s works, sound often serves as an invisible political medium. She explores how individual and collective experiences, histories, and knowledge are shaped by prevailing social and environmental conditions.
Mira lives and works in Bandung and Lembang, Indonesia.
